DESCRIPTION OF RESEARCH STUDY:

This is a study on computer and Internet security behavior. Employees are being recruited as participants in this study. This study will take place in the following steps. Completing this study will require approximately two hours of your time over the next 30 days.

  • First, you will be contacted directly or via email or phone to schedule an approximately 90-minute meeting with one of the members of the research team. This meeting will take place in one of the researchers' offices or labs. During this meeting you may be asked to a pre-test online survey, study some e-learning malware reports or watch videos about malware, and then complete a post-test online survey and a brief interview.
  • After a month or so, you will be contacted via email to complete a third, and final, online survey about your computer and Internet security behaviors and beliefs. This survey should take 30 minutes or less to complete. And this will conclude your participation in the study.
  • The nature of this study should not lead to you revealing any invasive or embarrassing information. Questions are confined to ones that address your professional situation, beliefs, perceptions, problem-solving, and/or demographics. Any information provided by you in the study will be afforded professional standards for protection of confidentiality.

Because personally identifying information will be collected in order to distribute your compensation and match your responses across the three study sessions, there is a small chance that this information could be accessed by individuals outside the research team. However, the research team will make every effort to keep the personal identifying information you contribute strictly confidential and stored in password protected files. Any personal identifying information collected will be immediately and permanently removed once the research team has matched your information from the three sessions of the experiment. All data will be presented in aggregate across groups of participants, and no participant's information will be presented in an individually identifying manner. We will not share your information with other parties.

BENEFITS: There are no direct benefits for participation in the study. Employees' participation in this study will help us better understand the organizational security issues with the use of computers and the Internet, and develop systems to increase employees' protection against malware attacks.

    COSTS AND PAYMENTS:

Your decision about participating in this study is absolutely voluntary. As a compensation for the time you spend in this study, you will receive up to $40 dollars gift-cards for your participation in all three sessions of the study. Should you decide to withdraw for any reason, you will receive compensation for the session of the study you completed (Survey 1 = $10, Appointment & Survey 2/Interview = $20, and Survey 3 = $10). Your data can only be able to be included in the study if you complete all three sessions. As an incentive to complete all three sessions, you will have the opportunity to enroll for a chance to win an iPad mini after you complete the entire study.
